The Story   (Scroll down to see who's in the cast & crew)

It’s 1933 in New York and the depression is on.  The outlook is bleak as people have no money, no jobs, and little hope.  Julian Marsh, a successful Broadway director, is going to put on what may be his last Broadway show.   “Pretty Lady” is sure to sell some tickets because of its well-known star Dororthy Brock.  Miss Brock, a has-been that the writers (Maggie and Bert) must work around, is the leading lady because her sugar daddy – Abner Dillon – is financing the show.  Dorothy is really in love with Pat - her vaudeville stage partner from many years before.

Unemployed dancers line up at the theatre entrance on 42nd Street to audition for “Pretty Lady” including young and innocent Peggy Sawyer from Allentown, PA.  She’s a terrific dancer, but lacks the courage to audition.  Billy, “Pretty Lady’s” romantic leading man, encourages her to audition and she gets a small part in the back of the chorus.  “Pretty Lady” moves to Philadelphia for it’s opening and during the big finale in Act I, naïve Peggy is pushed into leading lady Dorothy Brock who stumbles and breaks her ankle and director Julian Marsh must cancel Act II.   The show will not open in New York unless they can replace their star and everyone suggests Peggy.  The novice chorus girl is tapped to learn twenty-five pages of dialogue, six songs, and ten dance numbers in thirty-six hours.  She’s the only one who has the talent and the cast and crew has pinned their hopes on her to make “Pretty Lady” a hit.  After all, the show must go on!  They return to New York and “Pretty Lady” opens on Broadway, but will it be a hit show with a new star and revive 42nd Street?  You’ll have to come see for yourself and hear the Lullaby of Broadway.

42nd Street is typical of the musical style and entertainment during the 1930’s where people flocked to theatres for a bit of escapism.  Musicals had large tap dancing casts with extravagant costumes and big stars performed popular songs in front of a live jazz orchestra.  We can relate to many of the situations given today’s economy:  When the chorus girls find a dime on the street, they sing “We’re In The Money”.  For a cheap honeymoon, the bride and groom catch a sleeper train and “Shuffle Off To Buffalo” to see Niagara Falls.  Other songs include “You’re Getting To Be a Habit With Me” and the “Lullaby of Broadway” that proclaims the stuff dreams are made of on “42nd Street”.  Everyone will enjoy watching the 11th longest running Broadway show of all time.
